North Lincolnshire College
North Lincolnshire College is a relatively large educational establishment with centres in Lincoln, Louth, and Gainsborough. It teaches a range of subjects from GCSEs through to BSc courses in association with Nottingham Trent University.
Boston College
Boston College is a relatively small college situated in the market town of Boston, Lincolnshire. Akin to North Lincolnshire College; it teaches a range of courses from GCSE to BSc level, associated with De Montfort University. However, the lecturers responsible for Computer Studies are seriously below standard compared to their counterparts at North Lincolnshire College.
Nildram Internet
Nildram Internet is a fledgling U.K. Internet Service Provider; based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Originally a shareware company; providing U.K. registration services for a number of products, it evolved into the company it is today.... Provides single user dial-ups, leased lines, server co-hosting, and lots of other 'net' related services!
Demon Internet
Demon Internet is the most popular ISP in the United Kingdom; once famed for its speed and reliability, it has gradually become known as one of the slowest providers in the land...
However, they are cheap and that is why my pages are hosted on their servers :-)
Lincolnshire Regional Access Centres
A project co-funded by the European Union; it aims to provide easy access to modern technology including the Internet to Lincolnshire residents. However, their staff are completely Internet illiterate and don't even know what telnet is ;}
International Business Machines (IBM)
The true creators of the IBM PC :-)
IBM created a legend in 1981 with the invention of the IBM PC; and enhanced the quality of life for millions of people through the release of that invention.
Terratec Multimedia Ltd
Terratec was founded by the authors of MOD4WIN, a shareware module player for Windows. Their hardware was designed from scratch to produce a higher quality of sound than contemporary DAC designs; to this end, their equipment is state-of-the-art and is installed in recording studio PCs all around the world.... and yes, they are Sound Blaster compatible :)
Butlins Family Entertainment Resorts Ltd
Butlins provides the traditional family holiday for those people who just want to get away from it all...
They could pay their staff a bit more money though ;}
VNC
VNC (or Virtual Network Computing) is a piece of software that allows either a UNIX machine (running X11) and/or a Windows 95/98/NT machine to remote control each other; WITHOUT any special hardware (apart from a means of transmitting/receiving TCP/IP).
Simple DirectMedia Layer
Simple DirectMedia Layer is a set of highly-optimized routines designed for portability and will allow you to write applications for X11 and Win32 using just one set of source code; all O/S specific stuff is handled by SDL... Grab it now!
Darwin Awards
A humourous site based around the theories of Charles Darwin; lists the stories of people who stupidly kill themselves through unbelievable means or by some brainless act lose their ability to procreate :-)
Microshaft Corporation Inc.
Contains lots of anti-Microsoft propaganda; including such exciting games as "Win Bill's Money" and copies of Internet Exploiter to download... Perfect for the anarchist in all of us!
Netscrape Notvigator
A strange parody of the Netscape site; hasn't been updated in well over a year now, but some of the jokes still hold true even today...
jokewallpaper.com
This link given to me courtesy of that nice 'techie guy' Paul, at Butlins; lots of fun stuff to put on your desktop (be it X11 or Windows), some screen savers and some brilliant Win95/98 startup and shutdown screens *grin*
DJGPP v2.01
DJGPP is the MS-DOS port of the world-famous GCC compiler; with a version for nearly every microprocessor architecture and operating environment. As it is, it is compatible with standard UNIX libraries and aids porting from Linux, FreeBSD, etc.
The Allegro Game Library
Allegro is a library released under the 'giftware' philosophy; it is capable of addressing a wide range of SVGA cards through their native chip architectures and utilizing them to their fullest.
Provides comprehensive sprite support including transparency, blitting and scrolling...
XWinAllegro
XWinAllegro is an X11 port of Allegro; I personally use it to develop my MS-DOS stuff and then do a recompile with DJGPP on a host MS-DOS system; this greatly aids development as Windows doesn't get a chance to hinder development :)
The MIDAS Sound System
Jointly developed by Petteri Kangaslampi and Jarno Paananen; this library was written originally as an MS-DOS support library for sound cards (module playing). It now supports full multithreading support (Linux/Win32 only) and has streaming capabilities.
Currently unmaintained due to licensing stuff, etc.
x2ftp
x2ftp holds some of the world's best source code; if you want to find out how to do something in assembly or C/C++, there is code for it on x2ftp.. Mostly 80x86 assembly, and 16-bit/32-bit DOS C++ code (either Watcom or Borland) but a lot of it is portable as well!
SNES9X
SNES9X was originally written by Gary Henderson and Jerremy Koot; now maintained and contributed to by people all over the world. Currently the most popular Super Nintendo emulator for X11/Win32/DOS and most recently, can emulate the SuperFX and DSP1 chips!
XZX
XZX was originally written by Des Herriott and never amounted to much as a ZX Spectrum emulator; however, as it was open source, Erik Kunze updated and fixed all the problems associated with the original release, available for X11 only, it is the most powerful and feature-filled ZX Spectrum emulator I have ever used!
freshmeat.net
A site that every Linux user must have in their bookmark file! - contains up-to-the-minute news on software releases, bug fixes, security holes, vulnerabilities, etc... plus, it makes a great read as well :}
slashdot.org
Maintained by a self-confessed UNIX addict; this site covers the broad spectrum of computing and related technologies (including the forthcoming Star Wars prequels *grin*).. A must read for all computing fanatics, even those unfortunate enough not to have discovered UNIX :-)
Official Linux Kernel Release Point
The official release point for all Linux kernel releases; gets really clogged during major release periods. I advise using your nearest mirror site during those times as it is really slow!
Enlightenment
An interesting X11 window manager to say the least; allows you to create some very.. well... 'enlightening' desktops!
Red Hat Software
Producers of the Red Hat Linux distribution; available for Intel, Sun SPARC processors, MIPS, 68k, etc..
Slackware
Slackware is the oldest Linux distribution available on the Internet; has only been recently updated (October '98) but is still based around the original libc5 libraries.
Debian
Regarded by some of the experienced Linux hackers as the premier distribution of their favourite operating system; I am personally reserving judgement until I have seen a copy of Hamm (Debian v2.0) as I thought v1.0 was awful :(
S.u.S.E. G.m.B.H.
Ease-of-use installation routine and practically self-sufficient configuration makes me recommend this distribution for the Linux beginner; has a horrible habit of modifying configuration files that have been manually edited *grr*.
Caldera
Caldera produce commercial Linux solutions for businesses; they have ported Netware to Linux and a 3-user version is available free from their website. They have also written a Linux Netware client which allows file sharing from and printing to Netware servers; this is certified as a redistributable component so no licensing restrictions apply!
X11amp
A project dedicated to cloning the popular Win32 WinAMP MP3 player for X11; as you'll see, they are doing a pretty good job so far (skins, playlists, interface, are all implemented).
StarOffice
An extremely good suite of applications meant for both personal and business use; the Linux version is free for non-commercial use, so get downloading! (requires online registration, but this is free)
Netscape Communicator
The flagship product of Netscape Communications Corp.; this browser is the most technically advanced and portable (available for X11/Win32/MacOS) on the market today and although consumers may not agree with me; is superior to Microsoft's Internet Explorer :))
The K Desktop Environment
The KDE is a freeware Window Manager for X11; the controversy regarding the use of a commercial library (QT) has now been resolved. I would seriously recommend it to users just starting out with UNIX with some grounding in those 'inferior' Microsoft operating systems; a lot of the interface is similar so migrating to X11 is made easier.
GIMP
The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is one of the killer apps available for Linux, FreeBSD and other UNIX/X11 variants. This package has more features than most other image editing suites (and more useful, too!); including those for Windows...
Allows user-programmable operations to be performed on images through the use of the Script-Fu functions; you can't even do this in Adobe Photoshop!
ALSA
ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) is a project co-ordinated by Jaroslav Kysela to add support for those audio devices not currently supported by OSS/Free (included in the Linux kernel).
There are drivers for devices in the ALSA package that are also duplicated in OSS/Free; it is recommended that you use the ALSA ones as you get better mixer functionality and superior synth sounds if your card is capable of (hardware) wavetable.
Window Maker
Window Maker is one of the better-coded X11 Window Managers; with a low memory overhead and an extremely customizable GUI makes it my number one choice for the dedicated Linux guru ;}
Although this collection of links is fairly extensive; I would still welcome submissions from site owners; people who would like their home pages linked to, and generally anything that would be useful to the average 'net surfer!
